Valerie Joan (Olsen) Peterson of Leawood, KS passed away on March 27 at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Valerie was born to Conrad and Viola (Wagner) Olsen in The Bronx, New York, and remained a proud New Yorker till her last. She graduated from Walton High School in The Bronx and continued her studies in business school before starting a secretarial career in New York City. She met Robert "Bob" Peterson on the beach at the New Jersey shore. They married in New York in 1970 and soon after Valerie moved with Bob to his native Kansas City and started their life together.

In Kansas City Valerie started a career in the advertising industry, first at Bernstein, Rein and Boasberg, and then at Ruth Burke and Associates, where she worked for more than 20 years. Valerie was a familiar figure to all in K.C. advertising circles, an opinionated people person who was quick with a joke and a kind word to those who needed one.

Valerie was a loving mother to her son David, a trusted counsel to her daughter-in-law Lika, and a doting grandmother who loved nothing more than to spoil her small granddaughters.

Valerie was a homemaker, a neighbor, a friend, a daughter, a painter, a seamstress, a gardener and a lover of anything to do with the sea. She organized her years around pilgrimages to the ocean in New York and Florida, and asked only for a good book and a place in the dunes.

There was nothing more important to Valerie than other people. She drew energy from those around her and knew the biographies of every bagger at the grocery store, the sorrows and joys of everyone she came across. She went out of her way to help others, and to her family, friends and community she was a source of strength and stability.

She is survived by her son David; daughter-in-law Lika; granddaughters Elena Valerie, Julia, and Lucia; nephews Peter and Paul Olsen; niece Mary Healy; and friends and family across the country.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 2, 2015 at McGilley Midtown Chapel, 20 West Linwood Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. before the service.
